Burleson ISD to open new elementary school of choice; Norwood Environmental

Burleson ISD announces the Norwood Environmental Science Academy as its new school of choice. The NESA will incorporate science and environmental influences through applications to real-world settings.

A choice school offers students an opportunity to explore a specific pathway while still learning the required state curriculum. Beginning fall 2021, the specialized curriculum at NESA will focus on the environment with increased hands-on and outdoor learning. Gardens will be established for each grade level to provide custom, experiential learning, and outdoor learning facilities will expand.

“The Norwood Environmental Science Academy provides another opportunity for families to customize their students’ learning experiences while accommodating our growing community,” BISD Superintendent Bret Jimerson said, “We have had success with elementary schools focused on STEM, the arts, and leadership, and we aim to repeat that success with a school focused on environmental science.”

Integrating Project Learning Tree, a program that focuses on engaging, outdoor learning experiences, students will develop awareness, knowledge and appreciation for the environment. The program aligns with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills and is correlated to National Curriculum Standards for Science and Social Studies.

Building upon students’ abilities to make informed decisions, the program will enable students to learn important concepts, critical thinking and decision-making skills as they apply objectives to what they learn.

“Environmental education offers students opportunities for authentic, hands-on learning across the curriculum. These problem-solving and critical-thinking skills are essential and will benefit students throughout their academic careers and into their future,” BISD Chief Academic Officer April Chiarelli said.

Norwood will continue to serve students in the attendance zone as their neighborhood school. As a school of choice, other BISD parents may apply for their student(s) in grades kindergarten through five to attend through the lottery application system.

Families are invited to learn more about NESA and other schools and programs of choice in BISD during the virtual BISD Showcase through Friday at bit.ly/virtualbisdshowcase.

The NESA will join other schools of choice available to BISD students, including Academy at Nola Dunn, Academy of the Arts at Bransom, Academy of Leadership and Technology at Mound, STEAM at Stribling, Rigorous Educational Arcade Learning Model Secondary, STEAM Middle School, and Burleson Collegiate and Crossroads high schools.
