Bayonne announces 2021 Earth Day cleanup
Bayonne’s annual Earth Day cleanup will be on April 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
“Earth Day 2021 will provide residents a great opportunity to volunteer to clean up and beautify our community,” Mayor James Davis said. “It’s a day when we can work together building community spirit and a cleaner city.”
Last year, the city held a socially distant at-home cleanup due to the stay-at-home order prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Residents cleaned garbage and debris in front of and around their homes, such as used masks and gloves that continue to litter streets and sidewalks.
“There was an impressive turnout of volunteers for the Earth Day clean-up in 2020,” Davis said. “We look forward to a continuation of that enthusiasm in 2021.”
This year, the city is shifting back to its traditional format. Interested organizations and individuals are may register as a team. Sign up for a team of four to ten people. The city can also place individuals on a team near where they live or work.
“We are inviting individuals, community organizations, and other groups of volunteers to sign up to clean a specific area of the community,” Davis said.
Since 2017, various teams, local businesses, and community groups have taken part in the event.
“We would like to encourage all of them to sign up again for the 2021 cleanup,” Davis said. “As Mayor of the Great City of Bayonne, I would also welcome new groups and individuals to join me and the City Council Members on Earth Day for the citywide cleanup.”
Teams will be asked to take photos of the garbage bags collected so that they can be displayed on Facebook. The group with the most litter collected wins lunch with Mayor Davis.
The Department of Public Works is coordinating the cleanup with the Bayonne Urban Enterprise Zone. To register, call Dee Dee Bottino in the UEZ office at 201-858-6357 or email BayonneUEZ@baynj.org.
Bayonne’s Earth Day 2021 is sponsored by the City of Bayonne, with funds from New Jersey’s Clean Communities Program.
Each month, the city will sponsor cleanups at various locations in conjunction with the state Clean Communities Program. The cleanups will take place on March 28, April 24, May 23, June 27, July 25, Aug. 29, Sept. 26, Oct. 24, Nov. 28, and Dec. 26.
To register for the monthly cleanups, call or email the UEZ office. Participants will meet in front of the 7/11 on 20th Street and Ave. C at 10 a.m. on the specified dates.
Volunteers must wear masks. Supplies will be distributed. Cleanups will follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.
